Sheila Bird is Honorary Professor, University of Edinburgh and former programme leader at the Medical Research Council (MRC) Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge where she is a visiting fellow. She led the MRC Biostatistical Initiative in support of AIDS/HIV studies in Scotland. She has championed the use of statistical method in public policies. She has worked on vCJD
through dietary exposure to BSE, and on the design and interpretation of surveillance studies for abnormal prion protein; and on the late sequelae of Hepatitis C virus infection.
