In his reply to a parliamentary question asking when the DHSS had first become aware of AIDS and that AIDS was sexually transmitted, and could be transmitted through blood and blood products, Tony Newton stated: "Evidence that the AIDS infection could also be transmitted by blood transfusion emerged from the United States of America in 1983."
