In an issue of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report printed by the United States Government it was recorded that "As of July 11, 1983, physicians and health departments in the United States and Puerto Rico had reported a total of 1,831 patients meeting the CDC surveillance definition of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)".
