HSOC0003360 - Memo to members of The Haemophilia Society - 04 May 1983

Memo from [redacted] to the members of THS re alarmist reports on AIDS. The memo contains a statement made by Prof. A. Bloom. Provides a copy of a statement from Prof A L Bloom. The statement highlights the lack of evidence connecting blood products with AIDS and seeks to dispel the belief that UK blood is safer than US products. The letter quoted Professor Arthur Bloom as stating that [t]he cause of AIDS is quite unknown and it has not been proven to result from transmission of a specific infective agent in blood products. Again quoting Professor Bloom, the letter stated that [t]he situation is being closely monitored and whilst it would be wrong to be complacent it would equally be counter-productive to alter our treatment programmes radically.
