Letter from Dr M Brennan Locum Consultant to Dr J Levi Consultant Gastroenterologist Northwick Park Hospital requesting advice relating to HCVpositive donors In preparation for the introduction of antiHCV testing of all blood donations in Spring 1991 Dr Brennan asks Dr Levi the best course of action as regards suggesting that GPs refer the donor to a hepatologist as we do not know enough about HCV to decide whether this would be appropriate Dr Brennan plans to inform the positive donors GPs with their consent and to offer counselling sessions to take fresh samples for LFTs repeat HCV screening and possibly for PCR Hepatologists have expressed interest in seeing all HCV positive donors even with normal LFTs with a view to further investigation including liver biopsy Such tests should not be merely for research purposes
