Minutes of the meeting of the Haemophilia Centre Directors held on the 13/01/1977. Discussion includes Trial of prophylactic treatment of haemophilic patients at Alton by Dr P Kirk. Dr J Craskes study of hepatitis in haemophilic patients (study of 371 patients receiving Hemofil). Supply of factor VIII concentrate It was established that the Blood Transfusion Service could supply sufficient plasma for fractionation to provide a minimum of 40,000,000 units of factor VIII per annum. Discussion of whether the target collection of 40-50 million units of factor VIII would mean that cryoprecipitate and commercial concentrates would become obsolete. It was mentioned that the estimate made by the Haemophilia Centre Directors and the MRC Working Party concerned a minimum reasonable need, it was the opinion of members of the meeting that such a supply of factor VIII would cover for surgery and emergencies, whilst also catering to on-demand and home therapy to prevent crippling and to permit a reasonable active life. An interest was declared by Dr Jones (who was a paid consultant at the time by Hyland Laboratories) during the meeting in discussion of the procurement of factor VIII products. A delay in the expansion of fractionation in the UK Prof Blackburn plans to organise a meeting to look into ways of expanding the facilities for fractionating. Dr Waiter claims there is already agreement in principle between the Department of Health and Social Security in London and the Scottish Home and Health Department for the Protein Fractionation Centre at Liberton to supply the whole of UK with factor VIII as it has capacity.
