In a letter to Dr Lane, Dr Rizza suggested a number of questions which he thought needed to be considered at the meeting, including whether directors should now switch to using only heat-treated Factor 8 concentrates.

In a response to Dr Lane, Professor Bloom wrote that "clearly the matter is of great importance and has certainly come to a head with the Australian experience and with the unfortunate death of the Newcastle patient. Dr Lane in a letter to the reference centre directors stated that it was agreed that a meeting should be held "to discuss AIDS in relation to the management of haemophiliacs and the implications for treatment with factor VIII concentrates" and that 10 December was the first date suitable for the majority of participants.

The number of cases in patients with hereditary disorders of blood coagulation had reached 21 in the USA. 7 cases in Europe had been reported, including two in the UK. Description of a recent study of 7 patients with AIDS associated with blood transfusion.

Dr Craske explained that there was a "possibility" that transmission by blood and blood products may become "a serious problem" and that in the UK "widespread transmission could occur...unless precautions are taken to exclude donors from the already identified high risk group for AIDS".
