In a letter to all doctors, Scottish Health Department CMO, Dr R E Kendell, provided guidance relating to the recently announced HCV lookback exercise and sought their assistance in identifying patients infected with HCV through blood transfusion.

The Standing Advisory Committee on Transfusion Transmitted Infections noted that "the issue needs resolution and will be examined in more detail by a group to be convened to consider it further."

The Scottish Office wrote to SNBTS asking them to take forward "as expeditiously as possible" a Hepatitis C lookback for all of Scotland and to keep the SHHD informed.

The outcome of the Hepatitis C lookback in England was formally reported. 50% of tested recipients were found to be infected with Hepatitis C. 4,432 recipients of 6,687 blood components were identified.

Professor Cash recommended that where a regular blood donor was confirmed as Hepatitis C positive "the fate of previous donations is determined and 'lookback' initiated in accordance with SNBTS policy."
