There is evidence that blood was also taken from family members and used for research purposes, the nature of which remains unclear, with no explanation being given as to the purpose of the blood testing: see the evidence of Alice Mackie.

Professor Christopher Ludlam confirmed that his handwriting had been on a first draft of the AIDS Advisory document written by Professor Bloom in which Bloom had asked for comments from Ludlam stating that recipients had not been informed of receiving an infected batch.

Dr Evans said, treatment of cryoprecipitate was given to young patients with haemophilia rather than Factor VIII concentrates. The incidence of hepatitis was lower when using North Western Cryoprecipitate than imported concentrates. Concentrates were kept for home treatment versus cryoprecipitate for hospital treatment.

Home treatment with an element of prophylaxis had been introduced in the early 1970s and families were advised some children may have an injection for a day, or for a period when bleeds are particularly troublesome.

Dr Evans wrote to Dr Aronstam declaring he did not think it mattered which product was used so long as the concentrate is changed "from time to time".

Dr Evans wrote to Dr Aronstam stating he though it sensible that patients don't become too dependent on one manufacturer's concentrates.

There was no discernible change of approach in 1983 and 1984, the predominant treatment for the children at Royal Manchester Children's Hospital remained commercial concentrates, although NHS Factor 8 continued to be used as well.
