At a meeting of the National Blood Transfusion Service Advisory Committee, it was noted that ministers had accepted their recommendation to adopt a uniform system of distribution of the AIDS leaflets. The Committee advised on the particular problems of getting the leaflet to new donors and in its use at industrial sessions, and noted that there would be some cost implications for centres using a card call-up system.

A paper circulated for the meeting suggested organising more intensive interviewing of donors, particularly in areas with a known increased population of homosexuals and drug abusers.

Dr Michael Abrams sent a memo to Dr Harris following the meeting of the Advisory Committee on the National Blood Transfusion Service Working Group on AIDS to discuss arrangements for the collection and testing of blood donations. Dr Abrams reported there were concerns about the close questioning of donors as it may have been counterproductive, and it was concluded that the leaflet was sufficient.

A regional transfusion directors' meeting was held. Minutes of the meeting recorded that those who attended the AIDS Working Party meeting in November found the meeting unproductive, as there was "no new leaflet, no finance and no positive move towards full donor screening." The minutes also recorded regional transfusion directors' anger towards at the lack of information given to them in relation to AIDS.

In a meeting of the Advisory Group on AIDS, it was recorded that Dr Marcela Contreras had trialled a questionnaire offering donors the chance to elect their blood to be used for research. It was also recorded that Dr Contreras and Dr Richard Tedder met with London gay reps and got the "strong message" that some homosexuals were still continuing to donate.
