Dr Janet Mortimer wrote on behalf of Dr Harold Gunson to regional transfusion directors asking for the latest information they could give on recipients of blood from a donor subsequently found to be positive. As part of the follow-up, Dr Mortimer offered to check uncontactable donors against the database at the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre.

In a letter to Dr Harold Gunson, Dr Wallington proposed to abandon the HIV follow up study because he did not think they would learn more from it that was not being learnt from other data gathering efforts. It was stated that the data he received from the regional transfusion centres was incomplete, with some centres not having participated.

Counselling was discussed at a meeting of medical staff held at the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service headquarters. It was noted that each region was required to arrange for appropriate training of individual doctors at St Mary's Hospital.

At an Expert Advisory Group on AIDS meeting, it was noted that the Working Party of Regional Transfusion Directors considered it possible to commence screening of blood donations in October 1985. Details for notifying a donor tested to be positive for HTLV-3 antibody were set out by Dr Harold Gunson.

The Expert Advisory Group on AIDS discussed the AIDS counselling course at St Mary's Hospital. It was noted that about 160 people would be trained prior to the introduction of the HTLV-3 antibody test. It was agreed that an evaluation of the counselling courses was important.

The Expert Advisory Group on AIDS discussed the follow up of blood donations previously given by donors who were identified as positive for HTLV-3. Members agreed with the Screening Sub-Committee's recommendations, and it was noted that the "BTS was aware of the importance of good record keeping to enable the follow up of donations."
